The bridge was only opened in 1936, before which the traffic had to make a long and hilly detour on the road North. It is the site of one of the main traffic jams in New Zealand, mainly during the peak evening flows but also at various stages over the weekend. Extensive construction work is now under way to add a second bridge which will take the north-bound traffic.
