Great-grandmother went back to England and rem 1 CONC arried her first cousin, Arthur Wills in 1840. 1 CONT 1 CONT In those days it was said there were only three occupations open to gentle 1 CONC men. If your son was clever, the law; if strong, the army; and if neith 1 CONC er clever nor strong, the church! Grandfather must have been an exceptio 1 CONC n, for although both strong and reasonably clever, he took `Holy Orders 1 CONC '. He was an Exhibitioner of Balliol College, Oxford BA.MA and was ordain 1 CONC ed as priest in 1860. He became Rector of Acton Burnell in 1862; a livi 1 CONC ng he held for 60 years. See photos of church. 1 CONT 1 CONT Being a son of a mere army captain he was not well off; however, he marri 1 CONC ed Emily Meyricke from an old Welsh family somewhat more affluent. The sti 1 CONC pend (income) of Acton Burnell was only ú5.00 per week. Grandfather's life 1 CONC style could easily absorb three times their total income. 1 CONT 1 CONT COUNTRY LIFE IN THE 19TH CENTURY 1 CONT For those on the `right side of the metamorphical fence", life in the 180 1 CONC 0s must have been pretty good; for those on the wrong side, awful. Parso 1 CONC ns like my Grandfather were on the fringe of the good life; they mixed wi 1 CONC th the wealthy land owners, went to the same University etc. However the 1 CONC ir social aspirations were much curtailed by paucity of income; in short t 1 CONC hey often lived beyond their means. Grandfather was no exception. 1 CONT 1 CONT Before the 1915 War, the staff at the Rectory included three maids, a coo 1 CONC k, a gardener-come-coachman and an additional gardener. The War result 1 CONC ed in inflation and the introduction of income tax, causing the sta 1 CONC ff to be reduced to one maid, a cook and a gardener. The horses were reduc 1 CONC ed to a pony and trap and the gardens reduced in size and the tennis cou 1 CONC rt abolished. 1 CONT 1 CONT In the early 1920s (when I knew them) the rectory gardens were still exten 1 CONC sive. There was a large `kitchen garden', an orchard including a walk-in ` 1 CONC fruit cage', protecting raspberries, strawberries, loganberries, black- a 1 CONC nd red-currants, etc. Peaches grew espaliered against south-facing brick w 1 CONC alls and there was a large conservatory. 1 CONT 1 CONT As a child I can remember the gardener, John Marston, moulding new form 1 CONC al garden designs using a mixture of mud and cow manure, on which were gro 1 CONC wn fine displays of colourful annuals (See photo). 1 CONT Grandfather was one of the last of the breed of sporting parsons. He ro 1 CONC de with the hounds, fox hunted; and was one of the best shots in England w 1 CONC ith the result that he was invited to `shoots' all over the country. Indee 1 CONC d, he once went to Russia to shoot at a Russian's Prince's Estate, all exp 1 CONC enses paid. I remember a bearskin `mat', complete with head, on the Recto 1 CONC ry `morning-room' floor - a trophy of his 1 CONT Russian visit. In later life, he was invited as usual to a `shoot' by t 1 CONC he local squire, Sir Walter Smyth, whose extensive estate and deer park ad 1 CONC joined the Rectory. Sir Walter, who was a bad shot, had wounded, but not k 1 CONC illed, a stag. Grandfather went into the thicket to put the animal o 1 CONC ut of its misery, when 1 CONT the excitable Sir Walter decided to have another shot. He peppered Grandfa 1 CONC ther with lead and amongst other things, blew Grandfather's nose off. Yea 1 CONC rs later when I came to live at the Rectory as a small child, I can reca 1 CONC ll being terrified of Granddad. He used to have a pink celluloid nose he 1 CONC ld precariously in place by black elastic bands to the back of his head. W 1 CONC hen he got agitated, which was fairly often, the nose would fly off and di 1 CONC splay two holes. Grandfather was intimidating enough at the best of times. 1 CONT 1 CONT A `G0-GETTING' PARSON 1 CONT The new vicar of Acton Burnell was a man of action. The church built in 12 1 CONC 00 AD was in a serious state of disrepair. Normally the local Squire cou 1 CONC ld be relied upon to find the money, however, the Smyths of Acton Burne 1 CONC ll were Catholics and therefore could not be expected to donate more th 1 CONC an a token amount to the restoration of the Church of England. Undeterre 1 CONC d, Grandfather set about the task with great energy. He found, for instanc 1 CONC e, that they were able to sell the lead in the roof for enough money to re 1 CONC place the roof 1 CONT timbers which had been ravaged by the death-watch beetle. The church had h 1 CONC igh box pews, preventing the priest from seeing who was asleep during h 1 CONC is sermon, so they were cut down. 1 CONT 1 CONT Uncle Frank carved the ends of the new pews, the choir stalls, the very de 1 CONC corative pulpit and the background to the altar (See photo). A new organ w 1 CONC as installed which was ably played by my Aunt Marian. Few rectors and the 1 CONC ir families have ever done so much for their church and all with limited 1 CONT financial resources. Thousands of daffodils were planted in the church yar 1 CONC d; today buses come from Shrewsbury in the spring, not so much for the occ 1 CONC asional service, but to see the flowers. 1 CONT 1 CONT When Grandfather came to the village in 1862 the houses had no running wat 1 CONC er. There was a Roman road going up a nearby hill. A stopping point on t 1 CONC he hill was a natural spring, no doubt where, in 75 AD the Roman soldie 1 CONC rs would have watered their horses. Grandfather organised the wat 1 CONC er to be piped to the village enabling the inhabitants to enjoy a consta 1 CONC nt supply of water absolutely free. Who financed it, I don't know, perha 1 CONC ps this time he `conned' the Smyth family to meet the bill. 1 CONT 1 CONT Unfortunately in 1990 church-going in England is almost a thing of the pas 1 CONC t, with the result that many village churches and church yards are in disr 1 CONC epair. Acton Burnell no longer has a resident Church of England or Cathol 1 CONC ic priest. The population of this Shropshire village has remained almost s 1 CONC tatic. Like so many similar places the people have left the countryside th 1 CONC ey love, to find work in the cities. 1 CONT 1 CONT By good fortune, the Lee family ruled the area in the 16th century. They w 1 CONC ere ancestors of the famous American General, Robert E Lee, leader of t 1 CONC he Confederate Army, during the Civil War. The church has a magnificent to 1 CONC mb belonging to the Lee Family. (Refer LHS of photo of the interior of t 1 CONC he church). 1 CONT 1 CONT A rich charity known as the `Sisters of Virginia' has a project called `Pi 1 CONC lgrims Way' dedicated to the preservation of historic links with Great Bri 1 CONC tain. Acton Burnell Church comes under their ambit and is left in beautif 1 CONC ul condition. "God Bless the Yanks", no, I should say the Confederates. 1 CONT 1 CONT Grandfather, complete with nose, is on the right of the tennis group. I ca 1 CONC nnot identify most of the others. The lady with the tennis racket is Au 1 CONC nt Marian. On another page is a Sunday School Picnic held in the paddock b 1 CONC ehind the Rectory around 1910? 1 CONT 1 CONT It will be seen that it was not all shooting, hunting, fishing and playi 1 CONC ng tennis. The Parson had many secular duties to perform. The farmers a 1 CONC nd villagers had only a very basic education. The Rector was nearer to t 1 CONC he people than the Squire. They would therefore approach the `Reverend' wi 1 CONC th their day-to- day problems such as the rotation of crops, cross-breedi 1 CONC ng of cattle and of sheep etc. This was an area in which Grandfather had s 1 CONC ome expertise. He was a judge at Crufts Dog Show and a founder member of t 1 CONC he famous Shrewsbury Flower Show. 1 CONT 1 CONT Grandmother died early (1903) and Aunt Marion took her place. Over and abo 1 CONC ve running the household, there were a lot of church- related matters, su 1 CONC ch as teaching in Sunday School and religious studies at the village schoo 1 CONC l. She took food to the impoverished and visited the sick besides worki 1 CONC ng for such institutions as the `Waifs and Strays' and `Dr Barnados'. T 1 CONC he clergy, despite taking part in fox and badger hunting, were in some wa 1 CONC ys environmentalists. You have only to read such works as Morris' Briti 1 CONC sh Birds to realise much of the sightings and documentation was made by t 1 CONC he clergy; Uncle 1 CONT Frank, for instance was an expert on butterflies. My father used to tell s 1 CONC tories about my Grandfather, two of them particularly appeal: 1 CONT 1 CONT `One day Grandfather was in the middle of a Sunday sermon when two boys st 1 CONC arted squabbling. The Rector put down his notes, descended from the pulpi 1 CONC t; picked up the boys by the scruff of the neck, one dangling from each ar 1 CONC m, and walked slowly down the length of the church, and threw them o 1 CONT the north door. Walking back with great dignity and after ascending the pu 1 CONC lpit, he said, "now where were we." 1 CONT 1 CONT Soon after having been appointed Rector at the age of 26, he had to atte 1 CONC nd the Church Synod. During the lunch break he was heard to remark "that t 1 CONC he Bishop of Shrewsbury was a pompous, incompetent, old ass". Some `crawle 1 CONC r', wishing to get on, reported him to the Bishop who foolishly demand 1 CONC ed a public apology. Grandfather got up before all assembled and said " 1 CONC My Lord Bishop I have stated `that you are a pompous, incompetent, old ass 1 CONC '. I am sorry for it." Thus rendering the meeting uncertain as to wheth 1 CONC er he was `sorry for making the statement' or whether he was sorry that t 1 CONC he Diocese of Shrewsbury was encumbered with a POMPOUS, INCOMPETENT, OLD A 1 CONC SS of a Bishop! He made his point, but it could have had bearing on the fa 1 CONC ct that he never rose any further up the Church of England ecclesiastic 1 CONC al ladder! We Serjeantsons have a habit of speaking our minds on occasio 1 CONC ns when it would have been 1 CONT wiser to keep our mouths shut!" 0 @I0013@ INDI 1 NAME Mary Emily /Meyricke/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 20 JUL 1834 2 PLAC Ludlow, Shropshire 1 DEAT 2 DATE 28 JAN 1903 2 PLAC Acton Burnell, Shropshire 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Baptised 2 DATE 24 JUL 1834 2 PLAC Ludlow, Shropshire 1 FAMS @F011@ 1 FAMC @F160@ 0 @I0014@ INDI 1 NAME Robert Meyricke /Serjeantson/ 1 SEX M 1 TITL Rev 1 BIRT 2 DATE 10 OCT 1861 2 PLAC Titley, Kington, Herefordshire 1 DEAT 2 DATE 15 NOV 1916 2 PLAC Northampton 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Baptised 2 DATE NOV 1861 2 PLAC Titley, Kington, Herefordshire 1 EVEN 2 TYPE School 1 2 PLAC Rossall 1 EVEN 2 TYPE College 1 2 PLAC Keeble College, Oxford. My father made quite a bit of money at various times but during my upbr 1 CONC inging we were as poor as the proverbial church mouse. 1 CONT My father told me that the social life in Liverpool was not sufficie 1 CONC nt to offset the dreariness of a cotton broker's office. Social life inclu 1 CONC ded tennis (my father won a few cups), theatre, and dances (which were int 1 CONC eresting because they were held in the hold of Brunel's famous ship, `T 1 CONC he Great Eastern'). This colossal ship was the wonder of the world - 692 1 CONC ft long, 82ft beam. She had both paddle wheels and screw propulsion, wi 1 CONC th six masts and 6500 square yards of sail! The paddle wheels were driv 1 CONC en by two 3411 HP steam engines and the 27 ft diameter propeller by a 48 1 CONC 86 HP engine. (See photo). 1 CONT 1 CONT THE NEW WORLD 1 CONT Unfortunately when leaving for Australia I foolishly threw out much fami 1 CONC ly memorabilia including all my father's photo albums of Canada and U 1 CONC SA - only six photos were retained. In 1887 my father moved to Florida, US 1 CONC A. At the time land costs were next to nothing and my father took up pinea 1 CONC pple farming with some success, so much so that Uncle Reg gave up ranchi 1 CONC ng in Argentina and joined Dad in 1889. I am not sure exactly where they f 1 CONC armed, but I know Dad was an early member of the Hope Sound Yacht Club (ne 1 CONC ar Miami?), now a prestigious establishment. Dad used to sail to Cuba to b 1 CONC uy pineapple ships. I kept photographs of his yacht `The Eta May' whi 1 CONC ch he largely built himself. It was a yawl with a fair-sized cabin divid 1 CONC ed by a centre board; (necessary to negotiate shallow reefs). (See photo 1 CONC ). 1 CONT 1 CONT Somewhere around 1899 Florida experienced the worst frosts in living memo 1 CONC ry and which were not matched for another 30 years. In consequence all t 1 CONC he farmers (including my father) went broke. Around this time the real est 1 CONC ate boom bust and the banks became insolvent. Uncle Reg who by now had a f 1 CONC amily, went back to England. My father, still a bachelor, liked the clima 1 CONC te and the way of life, decided to `soldier on', at one time getting a two 1 CONC -year job measuring tides for the authority which was building the Flori 1 CONC da Keys railway. To do this he lived in the ETA MAY; my father was a ve 1 CONC ry tidy man, and he put that down to living in a small cabin for two year 1 CONC s. To get the job, he had to become an American citizen. At one time he h 1 CONC ad a small photography business, making his own plates. And once when thin 1 CONC gs were at a low ebb, he drove a tram during a strike (in Jacksonvill 1 CONC e, I think). He soon gave that job away when the strikers threw bricks thr 1 CONC ough the windows. 1 CONT 1 CONT Dad could never attribute any base motives to anybody. I never heard him s 1 CONC ay ill of anyone. This blind faith in ones fellow man resulted in my fath 1 CONC er being `taken down' and cheated throughout his life. No more so th 1 CONC an in the rough and tumble of the New World. 1 CONT 1 CONT BRITISH COLUMBIA 1 CONT Eventually he naturalised British again and moved to a less competitive pl 1 CONC ace. Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The province was well nam 1 CONC ed because it is very British to this day. Vancouver Island in 1990 is mo 1 CONC re English that the English. Dad settled in the island capital, Victoria. 1 CONT 1 CONT GOLD 1 CONT Early island settlers had reported that Indians in the north of the isla 1 CONC nd wore large gold nuggets about their person. My father and his brother-i 1 CONC n-law set out to locate where the precious metal came from. Streams in th 1 CONC is area showed plenty of evidence of small quantities of gold. One of the 1 CONC se streams had a lower waterfall, and logic decreed that the deep pool bel 1 CONC ow would contain much gold. There were no aqualungs in those days, so t 1 CONC he only thing to do was to divert the stream and pump the pool dry. Aft 1 CONC er months of work they achieved their objective but the bottom of the po 1 CONC ol yielded no gold. 1 CONT 1 CONT In 1908 my father married Lucy Gower Curtis, daughter of Captain Curtis, R 1 CONC oyal Navy. (See photo). One's mother's genes are equally important as one 1 CONC 's father's so I will include some background on the interesting Curtis fa 1 CONC mily later on. My father was involved in real estate and did well for a ti 1 CONC me, enabling him to have an extended honeymoon in England on the occasi 1 CONC on of the Coronation of King George V 1 CONT in 1910. 1 CONT 1 CONT The real estate boom bust in 1918 and so did my father, yet again. Dad w 1 CONC as what in Australia we call an owner builder, probably helped by his brot 1 CONC her-in-law, George Curtis, who was an architect. I was born on 17 May, 191 1 CONC 5, in the house he built in Cook Street, Victoria. (See photo). During h 1 CONC is last years in Canada, my father turned to his real love, gardenin 1 CONC g. He had a nursery business in Burnside Road. He specialised in alpine pl 1 CONC ants (rock gardens etc). He helped Mrs Bouchart lay out and stock her n 1 CONC ow famous gardens in her husband's Old Quarry in Victoria. 1 CONT 1 CONT AUTOMOBILE TRANSPORT IN CANADA (1915-1920) 1 CONT Dad's first `car' was a 1910 AC `Sociable' three-wheeler. It had a 5 HP si 1 CONC ngle cylinder, air-cooled engine driving the back wheel which incorporat 1 CONC ed a two-speed epicyclic gear box in the wheel's hub. It had no reverse: y 1 CONC ou had to get out and turn the vehicle around. In his garage he got over t 1 CONC he problem by installing a turntable (See photo). The nursery required som 1 CONC ething bigger for delivery purposes so he bought a second-hand EMF not not 1 CONC ed for reliability so his Chinese foreman said "EMF - Every Morning Fix Hi 1 CONC m". (See photo). Around 1919 he traded it in on a more reliable used ca 1 CONC r, a National Chevrolet 490. This famous car did for General Motors what t 1 CONC he Model T did for Ford. By 1927 Chevrolet passed Ford, selling a milli 1 CONC on cars. 1 CONT 1 CONT 1920 A VERY BAD PERIOD 1 CONT My father had a series of business setbacks but worse, my mother develop 1 CONC ed cancer. My father, clutching for hope, became a Christian Scientis 1 CONC t. Of course, it was a vain hope and Mother died, aged 51, in 1921. I w 1 CONC as 6 at the time. Father, at a low ebb, lost heart. Grandfather wrote sayi 1 CONC ng if we came back to England "he would pay for my education", meani 1 CONC ng at a greater Public School. Public Schools in England are absurdly nam 1 CONC ed because they are anything but public, and are in fact the privile 1 CONC ge of the rich. 1 CONT My father sold up in Canada, but by the time mortgages were paid, he had v 1 CONC ery little left. Returning to live in the English country Rectory on 1 CONC ly to find Grandfather was living in a dream world, he could not raise a p 1 CONC enny for my education. Leaving Canada was the worst thing Dad ever did. 1 CONT One good thing happened; Dad could not afford to ship the `Chev' to the U 1 CONC K, so he told his friends to `get what they could for it'. Instead they ra 1 CONC ised money and sent the car to England. The first he heard of it was advi 1 CONC ce that it was awaiting collection at Liverpool Docks. Although ha 1 CONC rd up we had the second car in Acton Burnell. Grandfather, however, wou 1 CONC ld not venture in any vehicle not pulled by a horse. 0 @I0018@ INDI 1 NAME William /Serjeantson/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 10 NOV 1796 2 PLAC Kinsale, Ireland 1 DEAT 2 DATE 30 NOV 1835 2 PLAC Guydores Bottom, Tasmania 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Baptised 2 PLAC St Catherine's, Rincurran, Kinsale, Ireland 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Regiment/Rank 2 PLAC 28th Regt. He obviously liked what he saw of Tasmania beca 1 CONC use on retirement he decided to retire there. He bought, or more likely, w 1 CONC as granted, one thousand acres of land near Cambelltown. It is easy to s 1 CONC ee why he picked the location. The river and valley and undulating 1 CONT countryside would have reminded him of the family home in Yorkshire. 1 CONT 1 CONT Here in 1833 great-grandfather built a house which he named Hanlith, aft 1 CONC er the original family home in Hanlith, Bellbush, Yorkshire. The English h 1 CONC ouse as he would have known it is shown in the print. Later, towards the e 1 CONC nd of the 19th century, the house was enlarged and extended to the right h 1 CONC and side, refer photo taken in 1930. Another photograph is of my Aunt Mari 1 CONC an and three unknown fellows outside the front door (1900s). 1 CONT 1 CONT We are lucky in having a photo of the original Tasmanian house, see phot 1 CONC o, because cracks developed in the end walls and the building was demolish 1 CONC ed in the 1930s. It was replaced by a wooden structure which was in turn b 1 CONC urnt down. 1 CONT 1 CONT A lovely modern brick house stands on the original foundations. The proper 1 CONC ty is currently owned by the Freemans who bought it in 1957. They kindly s 1 CONC howed Joan and I over the place in 1989. 1 CONT 1 CONT Our first family migrant to Australia did not live very long to enjoy h 1 CONC is retirement. The following account of the capture of his murderer appeared in the L 1 CONC aunceston Observer..- 1 CONT 1 CONT CAPTURE OF CAPT. SERJEANTSON'S MURDERER. 1 CONT 1 CONT Particulars of the murder of Captain Serjeantson by a bushranger named Hu 1 CONC nt will be probably in the memory of our readers. The ruffian has been ap 1 CONC prehended through the heroic conduct of a settler and his wife. The follo 1 CONC wing extract of a letter will be read with interest. " We are delight 1 CONC ed to communicate to the public the joyful intelligence that Hunt the bush 1 CONC ranger, the supposed murderer of the lamented Captain Serjeantson has be 1 CONC en apprehended on the Nile rivulet, by a man and his wife of the name of K 1 CONC err. The conduct of this couple deserves, and no doubt will ensure the 1 CONC m, the highest consideration from the Government, as well as the than 1 CONC ks of the community. It appears that Hunt came upon Kerr with a loaded pi 1 CONC stol while he was digging potatoes. Hunt desired him to kneel down, and w 1 CONC hile in the act of pulling the trigger to shoot him Kerr sprang at him, se 1 CONC ized him by the throat, and threw him down. In the struggle Hunt drew a p 1 CONC istol from his breast, when Kerr seized him by the wrist. Hunt then dr 1 CONC ew another pistol and was in the act of discharging it when Kerr roared o 1 CONC ut murder and his wife came with a gun to his assistance. Seeing the m 1 CONC en on the ground she exclaimed, " Which is you, Jem ? Shall I sho 1 CONC ot ? " " Yes, do! " he replied. The gun missed fire, the priming havi 1 CONC ng fallen out. There was no more powder in the hut and she broke the sto 1 CONC ck of the gun on Hunt's head, repeating the blows until he surrendered him 1 CONC self." 1 CONT This is a noble instance of the courage woman possesses in extreme dange 1 CONC r. The principal landowners are Villiers Dent, Esq., (lord of the manor 1 CONC ); the Hon. Mrs. Dawson-Damer, eldest surviving daughter of the late Lo 1 CONC rd Rokeby; W. D. Russell, Esq., and Mr. W. Dovenor, Burneston Grange. 1 CONT 1 CONT The village is pleasantly situated about four miles S.E. of Bedale. The Ch 1 CONC urch (St. Lambert) is a large and ancient edifice, rebuilt in the Perpendi 1 CONC cular style in the 15th century. It consists of a lofty clerestoried na 1 CONC ve with north and south aisles, chancel, south porch, and a west tower sur 1 CONC mounted by a spire. The building was thoroughly restored and refurnish 1 CONC ed by the Duchess of Cleveland, and a handsome east window of five ligh 1 CONC ts inserted in memory of her husband William Henry, first duke of Clevelan 1 CONC d. A three-light pictorial window on the north side of the chancel, subjec 1 CONC t, " I am the resurrection and the life," commemorates the death of Robe 1 CONC rt Russell, in 1876. There are also tablets here to the Carter, Harriso 1 CONC n, and Elsley families, and two brasses to the Chaloners and Andersons. T 1 CONC he lofty proportions, the sombre hue of its carved oak roof, and the elega 1 CONC nt gothic arches of the aisles give the interior a very handsome and impos 1 CONC ing effect. Some of the ancient dark oak pews remain. These, an inscripti 1 CONC on on one of them tells us, were added in 1627 at a cost of £50, left by T 1 CONC homas Robinson, Esq., of Allathorpe. The font is octagonal with the date 1 1 CONC 662 on one of its facets. There are six bells in the tower, three of whi 1 CONC ch were added by subscription in 1874. In 1887 about £200 was spent in dra 1 CONC ining the churchyard and planting it with trees, and at the same time near 1 CONC ly an acre of ground was added, the gift of W. D. Russell, Esq., the patr 1 CONC on of the living. The vicarage, valued in the King's Books (temp Henry VII 1 CONC I.) at £37 6s. 8d., is endowed with one-third of the great tithes of Burne 1 CONC ston; the other two-thirds belong to G. J. Serjeantson, Esq., Camp Hill, a 1 CONC nd Charles Carter, Esq., Theakston Hall. Its present value is £480. 1 CONT 1 CONT The Wesleyans have a chapel in the village, a plain brick building rebui 1 CONC lt in 1859, on the site of the old one. 1 CONT 1 CONT A Free Grammar School and Hospital were founded here in 1680 by Matthew Ro 1 CONC binson, M.A., Vicar of Burneston, an ancester of the late Lord Rokeby, w 1 CONC ho endowed them with a rent-charge of £43 5s. on a farm at Scabbed Newto 1 CONC n. The building along, narrow, antiquated structure of two stories, former 1 CONC ly contained both almshouse and school, the master and usher of which h 1 CONC ad free apartments in the house. In 1852 the constitution of the school w 1 CONC as altered, and separate premises were erected by subscription and grant f 1 CONC rom the Committee of Council of Education. The other property of the insti 1 CONC tution consists of 12 acres 3 roods of land at Carthorpe, purchased from 1 1 CONC 795 to 1818, with various gifts, legacies, and contributions, and now l 1 CONC et for £27 a year. There are five almspeople in the house, four women a 1 CONC nd one man, the youngest of whom has passed the allotted "three score a 1 CONC nd ten," each of whom receives 11/6 monthly, 5/- in July for coals, 2 1 CONC /- in September for a dinner, and 7/6 in January for a dress. 1 CONT 1 CONT The Poor's Land, seven acres, at Exelby, was partly bequeathed by Richa 1 CONC rd Foes, in 1673, and partly purchased in 1780 with £80 benefaction mone 1 CONC y, and £73 10s. raised by subscription. It lets for £12 a year. The poor h 1 CONC ave also the rent of a gravel pit (£2 a year) and the interest of £100 sav 1 CONC ed from the profits of this pit. 1 CONT 1 CONT CARTHORPE township (area 2,056 acres, rateable value £2,890) is chiefly t 1 CONC he property of George John Serjeantson, Esq., J.P., Camp Hill; William Poo 1 CONC le, Esq., Little Danby; Mrs. Ryott, Southport; and John Stead, Carthorp 1 CONC e. The land is generally low, and the soil partly clay and sand, exce 1 CONC pt in the north west about Intake house where it is of a peaty nature, ind 1 CONC icative of a lake or marsh in former times; its name too, Carthorpe - t 1 CONC he thorpe by the Carrs - is corroborative of this. Some fields here bear t 1 CONC he name of Boghills from the numerous little hillocks which they contai 1 CONC n. These we are credibly informed, when levelled down, rise again in fo 1 CONC ur or five years. The rise of the mounds is not gradual but sudden; the ex 1 CONC planation of the phenomenon we leave to others. 1 CONT 1 CONT The village occupies a low situation about a mile S. of Burneston. The Wes 1 CONC leyans and Primitive Methodists have chapels here, and there is also a pub 1 CONC lic elementary school, the property of, and solely supported by Mr. Serjea 1 CONC ntson. About half-a-mile from the village is Camp Hill, the residence of t 1 CONC he above named gentleman. The estate and manor were purchased by the prese 1 CONC nt owner's father, from the Rev. Mr. Lambert in 1796, and very considerab 1 CONC le additions made to the mansion. The Serjeantsons have been settled in Yo 1 CONC rkshire for more than 400 years, and for 300 years have held land at Hanli 1 CONC th. The present representative now, (August, 1888) in his 89th year, is t 1 CONC he last of the family. In a portion of the village called Hall-garth is t 1 CONC he shell of an ancient chapel, now used as a lumber shed and cow-house. No 1 CONC thing is known of its history nor of the period of its erection, but Mr. L 1 CONC ongstaffe assigns it to Saxon or early Norman times. 1 CONT 1 CONT An ancient stone hammer was found at Breach House in 1856, and a few yea 1 CONC rs ago three skeletons were discovered 12 or 15 inches below the surfa 1 CONC ce at Howe Hill on the east side of Carthorpe. 1 CONT 1 CONT The poor of the township have £3 a year, left by John Gale of Bushy, Hertf 1 CONC ordshire. 1 CONT 1 CONT EXELBY, LEEMING, AND NEWTON are three separate places, forming, conjointl 1 CONC y, a township containing 2,439 acres, and 690 inhabitants. For rating purp 1 CONC oses it is valued at £4,223. It is in Bedale union and Electoral divisio 1 CONC n, and Northallerton County Court district, The manor and a large porti 1 CONC on of the land belong to W. D. Russell, Esq., whose father, the late Cap 1 CONC t. W. N. Russell, inherited this estate from the late dowager duchess of C 1 CONC leveland (daughter of R. Russell, Esq.,) who died in 1861. Thomas Sturge 1 CONC ss and Mrs. A. Bell have also estates in the township. 1 CONT 1 CONT Exelby is a small village, about two miles E.S.E. of Bedale, consisti 1 CONC ng of a Wesleyan chapel and a few cottages. 1 CONT 1 CONT Leeming village, three miles E.N.E. of Bedale, is so called from its situa 1 CONC tion on Leeming Lane, a portion of the old Roman road (Watling Street), wh 1 CONC ich extended northwards into Scotland, The name, according to Dr. Stukele 1 CONC y, is compounded of two British words, Lhe Maen, signifying the "stony way 1 CONC ," in allusion to the stones wherewith it was paved. A more probable orig 1 CONC in is lime, which is here abundant, and which, in the old Frisian diale 1 CONC ct of Yorkshire about the time of the Conquest, was called leahm. A chap 1 CONC el (St. John the Baptist) was erected here in 1424, and endowed with £2 17 1 CONC s. 3d. per annum out of the Exchequer. This edifice having become dilapida 1 CONC ted, was rebuilt in 1839, at a cost of about £600, raised by subscriptio 1 CONC n. It is a very plain brick building. The living, formerly a perpetual cur 1 CONC acy, was constituted a vicarage in 1880, the district assigned including L 1 CONC eeming, Newton, and Londonderry. It is in the gift of the vicar of Burnest 1 CONC on, and is worth £160 per annum. 1 CONT 1 CONT There are also in the village chapels belonging to the Wesleyans and Primi 1 CONC tive Methodists, the former erected in 1844, and the latter in 1853, and e 1 CONC nlarged in 1862. 1 CONT 1 CONT The school belongs to the church, but was transferred in 1874 to the Scho 1 CONC ol Board, who pay one shilling a year as an acknowledgment. It is attend 1 CONC ed by 120 children. 1 CONT 1 CONT Newton, or, as it is sometimes called, Scabbed Newton, is a hamlet about o 1 CONC ne mile S. of Leeming. Newton House, the seat of W. D. Russell, Esq., J.P 1 CONC ., is a handsome stone mansion, surrounded by pleasant, well wooded ground 1 CONC s. It was rebuilt by William Henry, first duke of Cleveland, on the si 1 CONC te of an older edifice. Londonderry is a village on the great north roa 1 CONC d, about two miles from Leeming Bar station. A neat lecture hall has recen 1 CONC tly been erected by Mr. Russell for the benefit of the inhabitants. 1 CONT 1 CONT CHARITIES. - The poor of this township have the bequests of Ralph Cowle 1 CONC y, in 1663, and Thomas Isles, in 1684, together amounting to £7 per annu 1 CONC m. Isle's dole is given to the poor of Exelby only. 1 CONT 1 CONT GATENBY (the by, or town on the gata or road) township, containing 849 acr 1 CONC es, is chiefly owned by W. D. The hamlet is small and scattere 1 CONC d, and situated on high ground on the west side of the Swale, 4½ mil 1 CONC es E. of Bedale. Church service is held every alternate Sunday afternoo 1 CONC n, in the Ivy Cottages, by the vicar of Burneston. The rateable value of t 1 CONC he township is £1,145. 1 CONT 1 CONT THEAKSTON township (estimated area, inclusive of woods, 919 acres) is chie 1 CONC fly the property of Charles Carter, Esq., J.P., Theakston Hall. The Gran 1 CONC ge farm belongs to W. D. Russell, Esq. The village of Theakston, i.e., t 1 CONC he thatched town, is pleasantly situated, midway between Burneston and Exe 1 CONC lby. Theakston Hall, the seat of Charles Carter, Esq., is a handsome mansi 1 CONC on, surrounded by well wooded grounds. Mr. Carter succeeded his father, t 1 CONC he late E. J. Thos.Tran 1 CONC t. is shown to be the GG/f of Matilda. 1 CONT It would seem that Thomas ôjust arrivedö in Hemsworth - - there is no his 1 CONC tory to show where he came from, or any parentage. 1 CONT [early 2000Æs] [following a tip from Janet Avent of Australia] Later r 1 CONC esearch found that Thomas was the 2nd son of Gabriel Trant @@ Lowthe 1 CONT 1 CONT He was first noted in the baptism register (at Hemsworth) as the fath 1 CONC er of first son William Thomas TRANT and the subsequent christening of h 1 CONC is other children. Later, in the search for a wife he is recorded aga 1 CONC in in the Hemsworth marriage register when he married Alice Archdale. 1 CONT At this time it was found that Alice was already a widow. Further search ( 1 CONC in the burial reg.) showed that a Thomas Archdale was buried at Hemswor 1 CONC th in 1745. 1 CONT [12 Apr 1995] The IGI then produced the evidence that Thos. Archdale. w 1 CONC as married to Alice Serjeanison at Wakefield in 1738. 1 CONT This has to be a cross match. 1 CONT So, Thomasæ wife is in fact Alice Serjeanison, - - - of Wakefield. 1 CONT [Serjeanison û this spelling is as is in the Wakefield Mar. Reg.] 1 CONT 1 CONT Though ôRev.ö No evidence could be found for any connection in any way wi 1 CONC th the church in Hemsworth or elsewhere. In all registers, though record 1 CONC ed as Rev. he is also noted as ôschool-masterö. 1 CONT On the basis of this marriage date, it was estimated that his birth wou 1 CONC ld be circa 1720 ish. From this it was then further estimated that his ôUn 1 CONC iversity daysö would be around 1745 or so. Search of the Alumni Cantabrige 1 CONC nisis for evidence of Clerical training failed to find any entry at eith 1 CONC er Cambridge or Oxford. It was at this time felt that the REV. part of h 1 CONC is title may well have been self appointed - - and probably of no valu 1 CONC e, - - hence the Schoolmaster role. 1 CONT [This estimation of age later proved to be totally wrong, hence, earlier f 1 CONC irm identification was missed.] 1 CONT Married life continued in Hemsworth, and it is known that the family prod 1 CONC uced eight children, three boys and five girls. One girl, Mary died in a m 1 CONC atter of months, and one boy, the last, who was born after the death of h 1 CONC is father died at about three years. In each case, the bpt. is record 1 CONC ed at Hemsworth, and again, in each case Thos. is shown as ôRev.ö and aga 1 CONC in as ôSchool Master.ö 1 CONT Hemsworth burial register shows that Thomas was buried in January of 175 1 CONC 9. He did leave a will, and also a family of very young children - - - t 1 CONC he youngest not yet born who was named somewhat appropriately as John Post 1 CONC humus T. 1 CONT The burial register dose clearly indicate that the burial for Rev. Th 1 CONC omas was at Hemsworth, 1 CONT At a later date a search for the grave and m.i. was not successfu 1 CONC l. No grave marker could 1 CONT be found. 1 CONT 1 CONT [March 1999]When the IGI was finally mounted on the Internet, a search w 1 CONC as made for possible ancestors, and it was found that a GABRIEL TRANT bapt 1 CONC ised a family of boys, including a Thomas at Lowther, in Westmoreland betw 1 CONC een 1699 and 1705. This was considered a definite possibility, though n 1 CONC ot proof. It was felt that the distance separating the two locations (Lowt 1 CONC her / Hemsworth) at that time made a connection impractical and therefo 1 CONC re unreliable. It was also a good 20 years earlier than the up to then est 1 CONC imated birth for Thomas. This entry for Gabriel / Thomas was the only Tra 1 CONC nt entry for the whole North of England. The data was logged as possibl 1 CONC e, but not yet accepted in the record 1 CONT 1 CONT [May 2000]. Following my entry in the - Genealogical Research Index [200 1 CONC 0] - I received a contact from a Mrs Jean Avent, in Australia who was resp 1 CONC onding to my call for: ôTrant -1700+ - Hemsworth & Leeds YKS, Eng.ö 1 CONT She felt that a connection was possible between her Rev.
